The
Monroe County School System serves as an intern site
through a contractual agreement with the Little Tennessee
Valley Educational Cooperative. Monroe County serves approximately
5,500 students in grades preschool through twelve. Sixteen
percent of the school populations are special needs children
who are provided the full spectrum of services from inclusion
to developmental classes and related services. Their school
system has eleven school campuses in three civil districts.
Monroe County is a predominately
rural area located at the foothills of the Smoky Mountains
about 45 minutes southeast of Knoxville, TN. They are surrounded
by an abundance of wildlife and beautiful mountains. Sites
of interest include the Cherokee National Forest, Tellico
Lake, and the Lost Sea. The people of Monroe County are
friendly and have high values and integrity. For further
information contact their web site at

Interns working
within this system are afforded the opportunity to conduct
an in-house research project, work with a full-service school
clinic, attend national, state, and local professional development
seminars as well as develop skills in working with other
professionals, parents, and students. Interns are encouraged to be creative and to rely upon the resources available
to achieve their goals.
Supervision
is considered an important component of the overall internship
program. Each full-time intern receives two hours of individual
one-on-one supervision from doctoral level licensed psychologists
on a weekly basis. All interns in the consortium will receive
two hours per week of group supervision from a licensed psychologist through the Consortium.
It is
possible for the intern to receive up to 3 hours a semester
of graduate internship credit through the University of
Tennessee. The Consortium conducts the two hours per week of group
supervision in such a manner that it meets the University’s
requirements for graduate credit. If an intern is interested
in receiving graduate credit for this time, she or he needs
to make an arrangement directly with the University. Requesting
graduate credit for the group supervision is not required
of the intern. This is simply an additional benefit to the
intern if it is of value for her or him.
The
Monroe County School
System does not anticipate any internship positions for the 2010-2011 internship year.
