Knox County, Tennessee covers some 528 square miles and has approximately 336,000 people living within its boundaries. It operates 87 schools, including 50 elementary schools, 14 middle schools, 13 high schools, 3 vocational center, 1 adult high school, 3 alternative schools, and 3 early childhood education centers. The Knox County School System serves approximately 55,000 students. The student population includes a board spectrum of emotional, behavioral, learning, and physical exceptionalities. The Psychological Services Department of Knox County Schools employs 6 doctoral, licensed (by the State of Tennessee Health Related Boards) psychologists and 26 professional, licensed (by the State of Tennessee Department of Education) psychologists. The mission of the department is to provide comprehensive psychological services to Knox County students and their families so as to contribute to their functioning as life-long learners who will contribute to the community as a whole. Psychoeducational assessment, staff and parent consultation, in-service training, crisis intervention, and behavioral intervention are frequent activities of the psychologists.

Internship opportunities are available in a wide variety of school environments and include interaction with students ranging from early childhood to young adulthood. The purpose of the internship program is to provide quality training that will prepare students to function independently as school psychologists and to enhance their professional development. Emphasis is placed on the development of skills in areas most frequently expected of the professional school psychologists, which include assessment, consultation, observation, interviewing, report writing, parent/teacher conference, crisis intervention, and collaboration with other professions. There is also the opportunity for interns to gain experience in a particular area of interest, such as the assessment of pre-school children.

Supervision is considered an important component of the overall internship program. Each full-time intern receives two hours of individual one-to-one supervision from doctoral level licensed psychologists on a weekly basis. All interns in the Consortium gather to receive two hours each week of group supervision from a licensed psychologist. Knox County interns also participate in monthly staff meetings and consult with colleagues in clinical psychology, psychiatry, social work, occupational/physical therapy, and speech pathology. Additional supervision is provided by Knox County employees with specialized skills in areas of interest to the intern.

It is possible for the intern to receive up to 3 hours a semester of graduate internship credit through the University of Tennessee. The Consortium conducts the two hours per week of group supervision in such a manner that it meets the University's requirements for graduate credit. if an intern is interested in receiving graduate credit for this time, she or he needs to make an arrangement directly with the University. Requesting graduate credit for the group supervision is not required of the intern. This is simply an additional benefit to the intern if it is of value for her or him.

Knox County School System will have no internship positions for the 2010-2011internship year.
